Project and Site Updates

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Hello! It’s been a while but Clay and I have been busy and we have some great news for you.

First in the agenda is we now have an official Project Ragnite shop.  Located in Ishpeming, MI, just under the PC Medic building you’ll find the Project Ragnite development shop.  It is here that we are not only working on bringing you the adventures of Ordnance XIII, but some exciting new technologies such as Project Ragnite Synaptics (more to come on that in the future).

The second large announcement for today is updates for Ordnance XIII, now officially known as Isotope.  A lot of work (and I do stress the term “a lot”) has been put into character design and the overall plot of the series.  We’re still a little hush on specifics until after we finish moving everything into our new shop so please be patient!  We promise: it will be worth the wait!

Test Render Tuesday!

This week we have been concentrating on the grass and sky.  In the game, Valkyria Chronicles, the grass texture quickly pixelates as you near it (not uncommon in games, COD4 does it too for example).  We wanted to take this one step further.  If anyone’s played flower, you’ve probably grown to love the beautiful waves generated by the wind in the grass.  By using particle systems, we’ve recreated the effect while still using our stylized CANVAS-like engine to stay true to the Valkyria Chronicles style.  Shown here is a small test render:

Clouds were another focus of the past week.  Our clouds are generated in planes which align themselves to the camera (they change as you move the camera).  The effect works very nicely and reminds me personally of the skies in Bone’s Cowboy Bebop with the slight colour change, the render engine gives a unique style to the clouds.

We’ve also been busy on modeling.  Here’s a tank we’re currently working on:

For the most part, you can see our work is being done on Blender 3d.

Announcing Ordnance XIII

Clay and I are very excited to announce that we are developing a series based on the events in SEGA’s Valkyria Chronicles! The series will be in true 3d with our own style based on SEGA’s CANVAS engine.  While our pilot is planned for early 2010, there will be content posted infrequently on this site including shorts and still renders.

Introductions

Clay and I have been working together for a few years now in the media business and we’ve been kicking around the idea of starting our own media creation group for some time.  We’ve had a couple ideas here and there for projects, but nothing that really stuck well.

Last year I picked up a copy of Valkyria Chronicles for PS3 and became hooked.  Not only is it one of the best strategy games I’ve ever played (major RTS fan), but the graphics and plotline were extremely well done.  So well done I called up Clay and had him play a few levels.  Inspired by the CANVAS engine, Clay developed a similar set up of nodes for Blender and began doing test renders on our own CANVAS-inspired scenes.

Currently we’re working on putting together a fan-produced anime based on the events of the game Valkyria Chronicles.  Who knows?  If we’re lucky, a developer at SEGA might see our work and like it.
